Tanzania Inflation Rate Ticks Up to 3.1% in March


The annual inflation rate in Tanzania rose slightly to 3.1 percent in March 2019 from 3.0 percent in the previous month, mainly due to higher prices for transport and housing & utilities.

Year-on-year, prices rose faster primarily for transport (4.1 percent vs 3.3 percent in February) and housing & utilities (13 percent vs 12.3 percent). Additional upward pressure came from cost of clothing & footwear (3.4 percent vs 3.3 percent); furnishings (4.3 percent vs 4.1 percent); restaurants & hotels (4.8 percent vs 3.6 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.2 percent vs 2.5 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (3.1 percent vs 2.6 percent); health (1.8 percent vs 1.5 percent); recreation & culture (0.3 percent vs 0.2 percent) and education (1.9 percent vs 1.8 percent).

In contrast, inflation softened for food & non-alcoholic beverages (0.1 percent vs 0.5 percent). Also, prices fell for communication (-1.2 percent vs -2.1 percent).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched up 1.4 percent, after increasing 1.1 percent in the preceding month. Prices rose faster mainly for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.7 percent vs 1.3 percent), with positive contribution of rice (0.7 percent); maize grains (0.5 percent); maize flour (3.4 percent); fresh fish (0.7 percent); fresh cow milk (1.4 percent); coconut (5.8 percent); vegetables (3.4 percent); soya beans (2.3 percent); dry peas (4.0 percent), cassava fresh (3.6 percent), sweet potatoes (2.8 percent), dry cassava (1.4 percent), cocoyam (5.5 percent) and cooking bananas (3.3 percent). Also, cost was higher for transport (1 percent vs 0.1 percent) while it slowed for housing & utilities (3.1 percent vs 3.3 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, peaked to 3.7 percent in March from 3.1 percent in the previous month, reaching its highest level since April 2014.
