Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed edged up by 0.3 percent, to 1,169.1 thousand persons while the number of employed declined by 0.7 percent to 3,613.8 thousand. The number of inactive rose by 0.6 percent to 3,267.2 thousand persons. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was recorded at 25.9 percent. The number of unemployed persons fell by 5.1 percent while employment rose by 1.7 percent. The number of inactive persons declined by 1.2 percent.
Unemployment continued to affect mainly people aged 15 to 24 years as 51.9 percent of young active population was unemployed, a decrease of 1.4 percentage points from the same month in the previous year. Contrarily, the unemployment rate among people aged 45 to 54 rose further to 20.8 percent (from 20.1 percent), aged 55 to 64 to 18.3 percent (from 17.8 percent) and aged 65 to 74 to 12 percent (from 11.8 percent).
The unemployment rate for males decreased by 1.4 percentage points to 21.5 percent from 23 percent in January 2015 and for females it was down by a slower 1.1 percentage points to 28.7 percent when compared to 29.8 percent last year.
Among regions, the highest unemployment rates were reported for Thessaly – Sterea Ellas (30.9 percent) and Epirus-Western Macedonia (27.9 percent), while Aegean continued to record the lowest rate (12.5 percent).
