Brazil Unemployment Rate Highest Since June 2013

Jobless rate in Brazil increased to 5.9 percent in February of 2015 from 5.3 percent in the previous month as the number of unemployed surged 10.2 percent and the number of employed decreased.

Unemployment increased by 10.2 percent (+ 131 thousand) to 1.4 million in February over the previous month. In the same period, the number of employed persons decreased by 1 percent (- 220 thousand) to 22.8 million. 

The number of people either working or looking for work increased slightly to 24.292 million from 24.27 million in the previous month.

Among cities, unemployment rose in Salvador (10.8 percent from 9.6 percent in January 2015), Belo Horizonte (4.9 percent from 4.1 percent), Porto Alegre (4.7 percent from 3.8 percent) and in Rio de Janeiro (4.2 percent from 3.6 percent). There were no significant changes in São Paulo or Recife.
