The jobless rate in Japan fell to 3 percent in January of 2017 from 3.1 percent in the previous two months, matching market expectations. The jobs-to-applicants ratio was 1.43, the same as in the previous month and remaining at the highest since July 1991.
There were 1.98 million unemployed persons, down from 2.07 million in the previous month. Employment rose by 50 thousand to 65.04 million. The labour force fell by 50 thousand to 67.02 million while those detached from the labour force rose by 80 thousand to 44.04 million.
Among people aged 15 to 24 years old, the jobless rate fell to 4.4 percent from 4.8 percent.
A year earlier, unemployment was higher at 3.2 percent.
