The number of unemployed increased by 15 thousand from the previous month to 2.719 million in January and the number of employed rose by 21 thousand to 23.236 million, while those detached from the labour force fell by 22 thousand to 13.206 million.
Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, went up to 33 percent from an upwardly revised 32.8 percent in December, making the highest level since October of 2017.
The country's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, came in at 58.7 percent, the same as in the previous month. The labor force participation rate came in at 65.7 percent, the same as in each of the previous two months.
In the three months to January, unemployment surged 35 thousand while employment decreased by 35 thousand compared with the previous period and those detached from the labour force dropped by 53 thousand.
On an annual basis, unemployment declined by 144 thousand and employment surged 160 thousand while inactive people decreased by 129 thousand.
