Greece Unemployment Rate Edges Up in November 2013


In November of 2013, Greek jobless rate rose to a new record high at 28 percent from a revised 27.7 percent in October and 26.3 percent last year. Unemployment in Greece is more than twice the euro zone's record-high of 12.1 percent in the same period.

The number of unemployed amounted to 1 382 062 and the economically inactive population stood at 3 376 643 people. Unemployment increased by 78 041 persons compared with November of 2012 (+6.0 percent) and by 5 698 persons compared with the previous month (+0.4 percent).

Employment decreased 3.1 percent over a year earlier to 3 550 679 people.  Compared with October of 2013, the number of employed people fell by 1 percent. 

In November of 2013, unemployment among the 15-24 age group increased to 61.4 percent, up from 61 percent a year ago and 22.6 percent in November of 2008.
