In December, the number of unemployed people (1.1 million) dropped 6.2 percent over November and remained stable when compared with the same period in 2012. Considering the full 2013, unemployed people reached 1.3 million on average, 0.1 percent lower than in 2012.
On average, the number of employed people increased 0.7 percent in 2013 and stood at 23.1 million.
In the last month of 2013, average real wages (R$ 1966.9) decreased 0.7 percent on a monthly basis, but rose 3.2 percent over a year earlier. In 2013, average real wages received in the main job rose 1.8 percent to R$ 1929. Yet, wages were higher in São Paulo (R$ 2051) and Rio de Janeiro (R$ 2049) and lower in Recife (R$ 1414.4) and Salvador (R$ 1460).
In 2013, retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and personal and domestic objects recorded again the highest employment rate (18.8 percent). Compared with 2012, employment in education, health, social services, public administration and defense recorded the highest increase (from 16.3 percent to 16.9 percent).
