German Unemployment Rate at 33-Year Low


German seasonally adjusted harmonised jobless rate decreased to 4.8 percent in December, reaching the lowest level since late 1981. Preliminary estimates showed employment rose by 0.2 percent and unemployment fell by 1.5 percent.

Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed fell by 1.5 percent to 2.01 million persons and employment rose slightly by 0.2 percent to 40.05 million. The employment rate remained steady at 65.2 percent.

Youth unemployment rate decreased to 7.2 percent from a revised 7.3 percent in the previous month. 

Compared with the same month last year, employment grew 1.3 percent while unemployment dropped 5.6 percent in December of 2014. 

Figures for November were revised downwards to show unemployment rate at 4.9 percent from a provisional 5 percent.
