China Quarterly GDP Growth Weakest in 3 Quarters

The Chinese economy grew by 1.5 percent quarter-on-quarter in the three months to December 2018, compared to a 1.6 percent expansion in the previous period and in line with market estimates. It was the weakest pace of quarterly expansion since the first quarter of the year.

Year-on-year, the economy advanced 6.4 percent in the December quarter of 2018, after a 6.5 percent growth in the previous quarter and matching market expectations. It was the lowest growth rate since the global financial crisis, amid intense trade dispute with the US and weakening domestic demand.

Considering full 2018, the economy expanded 6.6 percent, the weakest pace since 1990.

Previously, China's statistic bureau revised down the country's GDP growth for 2017 to 6.8 percent from 6.9 percent.
