Ireland Unemployment Rate Falls to 12.4% in December


In December of 2013, Irish jobless rate kept its downward trend and declined to 12.4 percent from 12.5 percent in November.

On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 3,300 in December of 2013, reducing the seasonally adjusted total to 402,800.

The number of long term claimants on the Live Register in December 2013 was 179,621.  The number of male long term claimants decreased by 8,741 (-6.6 percent) in the year to December, while females increased by 1,218 (+2.2 percent), giving an overall annual decrease of 7,523 (-4.0 percent) in the number of long term claimants.

54.6 percent (215,790) of all claimants on the Live Register were short term claimants.  The comparable figure for December of 2012 was 55.8 percent (236,589).  The annual fall of 20,799 (-8.8 percent) in the number of short term claimants consisted of a decrease of 15,424 (-11.2 percent) in the number of male short term claimants and a decrease of 5,375 (-5.4 percent) in female short term claimants.
